BT Webwise works automatically over BT's network to make your online experience safer and more relevant to you.
BT Webwise automatically checks every website you visit against our list of known fraudulent or 'phishing' websites - including websites you may visit by accident. Our list is constantly updated and sites that appear on it will trigger a warning notice before you reach them, so you can choose whether or not to continue.
Despite firewalls, antivirus and anti-spam programs, fraudulent emails can still get through to your inbox and pose a threat to your security. BT Webwise gives you an extra layer of safety by warning you before you reach fraudulent sites.
BT Webwise uses temporary information stored on your computer to make advertising from participating websites more relevant to you, based on what you've searched for and the websites you've visited. For example — if BT Webwise detects you've visited travel web sites, or used terms relating to travel in a search engine, you may be shown travel adverts while surfing.
BT Webwise will never capture or store any details that identify you as an individual. BT Webwise assigns a unique, randomly-generated number in a cookie on your computer to preserve anonymity. This cookie matches your browsing activity to advertising categories, which we use to show adverts that are more relevant to your interests.
You can switch BT Webwise on or off — at any time.
If you switch it off, BT Webwise will no longer collect any data from the web pages that you visit, meaning we will not provide anti-fraud warnings and the adverts you see online will not be tailored to your interests.
BT Webwise uses cookies stored on your computer to capture your preference. These cookies are linked to individual computers, user accounts and browsers, so you will need to switch the service on or off from each computer, user account and browser you use. If you delete the cookie, you'll need to reset your preference.
